What Can a School Counselor Do?

Confidentiality

Individual Counseling
  • Working with students to help them grow and learn skills that can include emotions, social development, career and college questions, and academics.
Group Counseling
  • Small groups of students that engage with one another on certain topics depending on the needs of the school and students in the group.
Classroom Lessons
  • I provide classroom lessons for all students to work towards being successful 21st century students both inside and outside of school.
Advocacy
  • I advocate for your students to get the best opportunities they can for success.
Confidentiality is very important in counseling. I believe that each student and their families deserve to be treated with the deepest respect and discretion. Confidentiality goes two ways and you also play a large part in this. I will guard your privacy as much as permitted by law.
There are three main areas in which I am required by law to break confidentiality.
  1. If a student poses a danger to themselves or others
  2. Any type of abuse
  3. Neglect

Elgin/New Leipzig School Counseling Mission

School Counseling vs. Mental Health Counseling

To promote a safe and positive educational environment while developing life-long learning skills utilizing academic, career, and personal/social domains of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA).
While school counselors are trained in many of the same aspects as private practice Mental Health Counselors, our role is very different in that we are not solely focused on mental health. We are educators who provide a onsite resource to support and prepare students for Academic, Career, & Post-Secondary life.
